Be your own dentist! Here are some tips for removing tartar buildup at home.

🦷 “Be Your Own Dentist” — Can You Remove Tartar at Home?

Unfortunately, once plaque hardens into tartar (calculus), you can’t safely brush or scrape it off at home. The American Dental Association says hardened tartar requires professional dental cleaning.

What you can do at home

  • Brush twice a day for 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Clean between your teeth every day with floss or an interdental brush.
  • Consider an electric toothbrush if it helps you remove plaque more effectively.
  • Limit frequent sugary drinks and snacks.
  • Use an ADA-accepted therapeutic mouthwash if appropriate for your needs.

These habits remove plaque before it hardens, which is the key to preventing additional tartar.

⚠️ Don’t scrape tartar yourself

Avoid using pins, knives, metal dental scalers, or homemade acids such as vinegar or lemon juice. You can injure your gums, scratch tooth surfaces, or damage dental work. Professional scaling is designed to remove calculus safely, including deposits below the gumline when necessary.

If your gums bleed frequently, are swollen, receding, or your teeth feel loose, arrange a dental examination. Those can be signs of gum disease requiring more than home cleaning.

Bottom line: You can prevent and control plaque at home, but established tartar is a job for a dental professional—not a DIY scraper.
