Here’s a Simple Old-Fashioned Trick for Cleaning an Oven

Cleaning a dirty oven doesn’t have to involve harsh chemicals. A classic method using common household ingredients can help loosen baked-on grease and grime.

What You’ll Need

  • ½ cup baking soda
  • Water
  • White vinegar
  • A spray bottle
  • A soft sponge or microfiber cloth

How to Clean Your Oven

  1. Remove the oven racks. Wash them separately in warm, soapy water.
  2. Make a paste. Mix the baking soda with a small amount of water until it forms a spreadable paste.
  3. Apply the paste. Spread it over the inside of the oven, avoiding the heating elements. Focus on greasy or stained areas.
  4. Let it sit. Leave the paste on for at least 8–12 hours or overnight to help break down baked-on residue.
  5. Wipe it away. Use a damp cloth or sponge to remove the dried paste.
  6. Spray with vinegar. Lightly mist any remaining baking soda residue with white vinegar. The gentle fizzing helps lift stubborn grime.
  7. Finish with a clean wipe. Wipe the oven interior with a damp cloth until all residue is gone.

Extra Tips

  • For stubborn spots, gently scrub with a non-abrasive sponge or plastic scraper.
  • Clean spills soon after the oven has cooled to help prevent heavy buildup.
  • Leave the oven door open for a short time after cleaning to ensure the interior dries completely.

This time-tested baking soda and vinegar method is an effective way to freshen your oven and remove grease without relying on harsh chemical cleaners.
