7 Warning Signs of Stroke in Women — Detect It Quickly

A stroke doesn’t always look dramatic, and women may experience some additional symptoms such as generalized weakness, confusion, fatigue, nausea or vomiting. But the classic stroke symptoms are the same in women and men.

The 7 signs to know

  1. Sudden facial drooping or numbness — especially on one side.
  2. Sudden weakness or numbness in an arm or leg — particularly on one side.
  3. Sudden trouble speaking — slurred speech, difficulty finding words, or trouble understanding others.
  4. Sudden vision changes — blurred, double, or lost vision in one or both eyes.
  5. Sudden loss of balance or coordination — dizziness, difficulty walking, or unexplained clumsiness.
  6. Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
  7. Sudden confusion, unusual weakness, nausea or vomiting — these can occur in women and may be overlooked.

⏰ The most important part: act immediately

Remember B.E. F.A.S.T.:

  • B — Balance loss
  • E — Eye/vision changes
  • F — Face drooping
  • A — Arm weakness
  • S — Speech difficulty
  • TTime to call emergency services

If any of these symptoms start suddenly, call 911 (or your local emergency number) immediately. Don’t drive yourself to the hospital. Note the time the symptoms began, because treatment options are time-sensitive.

Even if the symptoms disappear, don’t ignore them. A transient ischemic attack (TIA) can produce temporary stroke-like symptoms and requires urgent medical evaluation.
