How to get rid of mucus in the chest and throat

7 ways to get rid of mucus

1. Drink plenty of fluids. Warm water, soup, and caffeine-free tea can help thin mucus so it is easier to cough up or swallow.

2. Gargle with salt water. Mix ½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Gargle and spit it out to soothe your throat.

3. Use honey. Take 1–2 teaspoons of honey, alone or in warm water, to soothe throat irritation and coughing. Do not give honey to children under 1 year.

4. Try a warm shower. Moist air may ease irritation. Avoid bowls of boiling water because they can cause burns.

5. Sleep with your head elevated. An extra pillow may help reduce mucus collecting in your throat, especially at night.

6. Avoid irritants. Stay away from cigarette smoke, dust, and strong fragrances.

7. Ask a pharmacist about medicine. An expectorant such as guaifenesin may help loosen chest mucus where available. Follow the label and check suitability with a pharmacist.

When to seek medical help

Get urgent medical attention if you have difficulty breathing, chest pain, blue lips, or cough up significant amounts of blood. Seek medical advice if you have a persistent high fever, worsening symptoms, or a cough lasting more than 3 weeks. Avoid taking antibiotics without medical advice
