Can Your Fingernails Predict Your Life Expectancy?
That headline is misleading. No single fingernail sign can reliably predict how long a person will live. However, some nail changes can be clues to underlying health conditions.
Watch for:
- A new or changing dark streak: Rarely, this can be melanoma and should be evaluated by a clinician.
- Clubbing: Fingertips become enlarged and nails curve more than usual; this can occur with certain heart or lung diseases.
- Spoon-shaped nails: May be associated with iron deficiency.
- Markedly pale nails: Can sometimes occur with anemia or other systemic conditions.
- Yellow, thickened, crumbly nails: Often due to fungal infection, although other conditions can cause similar changes.
Many nail changes are harmless and can result from aging, injury, nail products, or common infections.
Bottom line: Your fingernails can sometimes provide health clues, but they aren’t a crystal ball for life expectancy. A new, persistent, or rapidly changing nail abnormality should be checked by a healthcare professional.
