What’s the Riskiest Time to Shower After 70?

There isn’t a specific hour of the day that is inherently dangerous for showering after age 70. The bigger risks are falls, sudden blood-pressure changes, and extreme water temperatures.

Times and situations that can be riskier

  • Immediately after waking: Blood pressure can drop when getting out of bed, potentially causing dizziness.

  • After a large meal: Some people experience a temporary drop in blood pressure after eating.

  • When you’re dehydrated or ill: You may be more prone to weakness or dizziness.

  • Very hot showers: Hot water can widen blood vessels and make you light-headed or faint.

  • When you’re already dizzy or weak: Showering alone increases the consequences of a fall.

Safer shower habits

Use warm rather than very hot water, install nonslip flooring or a shower mat, consider grab bars, keep the bathroom well lit, and take your time standing up and getting into or out of the shower.

If you regularly become dizzy, faint, short of breath, or unusually weak while showering, speak with a healthcare professional. Medications for blood pressure and other conditions can sometimes contribute to these symptoms.

So, despite the dramatic social-media headline, there’s no medically established “dangerous shower time” simply because you’re over 70. The circumstances surrounding the shower matter much more.
