If you always sleep on your right side, should you be worried?

Usually, no. Sleeping on your right side is not inherently dangerous, and there isn’t a rule that everyone needs to avoid it.

Your preferred sleeping position can affect certain symptoms, though:

  • Acid reflux: Some people with reflux may find left-side sleeping more comfortable because it can reduce nighttime reflux compared with right-side sleeping.

  • Snoring or sleep apnea: Side sleeping is often preferable to sleeping flat on your back because it can help keep the airway open.

  • Shoulder or hip pain: Staying on one side all night can put pressure on that shoulder or hip. Changing positions and using a supportive pillow may help.

  • Pregnancy: Later in pregnancy, healthcare professionals may recommend side sleeping; the most appropriate position can depend on individual circumstances.

There is no good evidence that routinely sleeping on your right side damages your heart, kidneys, or other organs in an otherwise healthy person.

If you wake with chest pain, significant shortness of breath, choking/gasping, or severe heartburn, don’t assume your sleeping position is the cause—those symptoms may need medical evaluation.

Bottom line: If you sleep comfortably on your right side and wake feeling well, there’s generally no reason to change simply because of a viral health claim.
