How to Get Rid of Phlegm and Mucus in Chest and Throat Naturally

If you have phlegm or mucus in your chest and throat from a cold, flu, allergies, or a mild respiratory infection, it often improves on its own. The goal is usually to thin the mucus and help your body clear it, rather than trying to completely stop the cough. nhs.uk+1

Natural ways to loosen mucus

  • Drink plenty of fluids. Water helps thin mucus so it is easier to cough up. Warm water, tea, soup, or broth can also soothe your throat. nhs.uk+1

  • Honey: Try 1–2 teaspoons in warm water or tea. Honey can reduce coughing and soothe an irritated throat. Never give honey to a child under 1 year old. Mayo Clinic

  • Take a warm shower or use a cool-mist humidifier. Moist air may make mucus easier to clear. Keep humidifiers clean to prevent mold and bacteria. Mayo Clinic

  • Gargle with warm salt water if mucus is mainly bothering your throat: dissolve about ½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, gargle, and spit it out. nhs.uk

  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated. Extra pillows can make breathing more comfortable and may help mucus drain. nhs.uk

  • Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke. Smoke irritates the airways and can make coughing and mucus worse. Mayo Clinic

  • Don’t suppress a productive cough unnecessarily. Coughing helps move mucus out of the airways. Mayo Clinic

A simple routine

Morning: warm water/tea + honey → warm shower → gently cough up loosened mucus.
During the day: drink water regularly and avoid smoke.
Night: warm drink + elevated head + humidified air if the room is dry.

When to get medical help

Seek urgent medical care if you have difficulty breathing, significant chest pain, coughing up blood, or trouble swallowing. Mayo Clinic+1

It’s also worth seeing a clinician if the cough lasts more than 3 weeks, is getting worse, or comes with persistent fever, wheezing, or significant green/yellow mucus. Mayo Clinic+1

If you tell me how many days you’ve had the phlegm, its color (clear/white/yellow/green), whether you have fever or chest pain, and your age, I can suggest the most appropriate home-care approach.
