5 Diabetes Symptoms That Can Appear at Night

Diabetes symptoms aren’t necessarily limited to nighttime, but high blood sugar can make certain symptoms particularly noticeable overnight. CDC+1

  1. Waking up frequently to urinate
High blood glucose can cause the kidneys to excrete more glucose and water, leading to increased urination—sometimes several nighttime bathroom trips. nhs.uk+1

  2. Strong thirst or a dry mouth
Losing extra fluid through frequent urination can leave you unusually thirsty, including during the night. nhs.uk

  3. Nighttime sweating, shaking, or a racing heartbeat
In someone taking insulin or certain diabetes medicines, blood sugar can fall too low during sleep. Symptoms can include sweating, shaking, hunger, anxiety, dizziness, or a fast heartbeat. CDC

  4. Feeling unusually tired in the morning
High blood sugar can cause fatigue, while repeatedly waking to urinate can also disrupt sleep. Fatigue is a recognized symptom of diabetes. nhs.uk+1

  5. Blurred vision or difficulty focusing
High blood sugar can cause temporary changes affecting the eye’s ability to focus, so some people notice blurred vision. CDC+1

When to get tested

Having one of these symptoms doesn’t mean you have diabetes. But if several are occurring repeatedly—particularly frequent nighttime urination, excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss, or persistent fatigue—a blood glucose test and/or HbA1c test can help determine whether diabetes is present. Many people with type 2 diabetes have few or no symptoms initially. nhs.uk

If someone with diabetes develops very frequent urination and thirst together with nausea, vomiting, confusion, extreme sleepiness, or difficulty breathing, urgent medical care is needed because these can be signs of a dangerous hyperglycemic emergency. CDC+1
