Are you an ectomorph, mesomorph, or endomorph? Discover your body type and how to make the most of it.

The ectomorph/mesomorph/endomorph system is a popular way of describing body shapes, but it’s important to know that these categories are not scientifically established predictors of metabolism, health, or the best diet/exercise plan.

The three traditional body types

  • Ectomorph: Traditionally described as relatively lean, with narrower shoulders/hips and difficulty gaining weight or muscle.

  • Mesomorph: Traditionally described as naturally muscular or athletic, with broader shoulders and a more pronounced muscle build.

  • Endomorph: Traditionally described as having a rounder or softer build and tending to gain body fat more easily.

What matters more

Your body is not required to fit one category. Genetics, age, hormones, activity level, nutrition, sleep, and medical conditions all influence body composition.

Rather than choosing a diet based on a “body type,” it’s generally more useful to consider your current body composition, goals, activity level, and overall health. For example, gaining muscle generally requires resistance training and adequate protein regardless of whether someone is described as an ectomorph, mesomorph, or endomorph.

If you tell me your height, weight, waist measurement, and whether your goal is to lose fat, gain muscle, or maintain weight, I can help you assess your body composition without relying on the three-body-type system.
