The 3 Types of Breakfast That Could Damage Your Kidneys

If you’re fact-checking the headline

“3 types of breakfast that could damage your kidneys,” the idea needs some context. No particular breakfast automatically “damages” healthy

kidneys, but certain dietary patterns can increase kidney-disease risk or be problematic for people who already have chronic kidney disease (CKD).

3 breakfast patterns to be cautious about

  1. Processed meats 🥓
Bacon, sausages, ham, and other processed meats can be high in sodium and phosphorus additives. Regularly eating large amounts is not a kidney-friendly habit, particularly for people with CKD.
  2. Very salty packaged breakfasts 🧂
Instant noodles, packaged savory foods, processed cheese, and heavily salted breakfast items can provide a lot of sodium. Excess sodium can raise blood pressure, which is a major contributor to kidney damage.
  3. Highly sugary/ultra-processed breakfasts 🥤
Sugary cereals, pastries, sweetened drinks, and similar foods can contribute to excess weight and poor blood-sugar control. Diabetes and high blood pressure are major causes of chronic kidney disease.

What is a better choice?

A kidney-friendly breakfast can be as simple as oatmeal with suitable fruit, an egg with vegetables, or plain yogurt with fruit, depending on your individual health needs.

If you already have CKD, don’t automatically follow generic “kidney diet” lists. Your recommended amounts of protein, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and fluids depend on your kidney function, medications, and blood tests.

And be wary of headlines claiming that a particular food will “cleanse” or “repair” your kidneys—there’s no breakfast that can do that.
